980nm sits at the absorption peak for the porphyrin in vascular cells, so the energy goes where it is aimed. The handpiece focuses the beam to between 0.2 and 0.5mm, concentrating it on the vessel instead of scattering heat into the skin around it — the failure mode that gives older vascular lasers their reputation for redness and burns. Most lesions clear in one or two sessions, and the collagen response tends to improve skin density in the treated area as a secondary effect.
